CF 231 is proud to “Spotlight” Larry Bilello
“Athlete of the Month” for June 2017.
Larry has been a member of CF231 since last June. In that 12 month period, Larry has made tremendous gains in strength, endurance and flexibility. His commitment to the sport of Crossfit is obvious to all as he regularly attends classes, is a member of the Mongrel Union, participates in our Yoga classes and is an enthusiastic participant at every special event at the gym.
Larry participated in his first open competition this past winter and completed his first “Murph” this past Memorial Day weekend.
Larry refers to himself as a “gym rat". Generally, you will find Larry coming to the gym around 6 pm to do specialty work or an extended warm -up before the 7 pm class. He spent time this winter working on a bar muscle-up which he mastered just before the 2017 open. What is also worth mentioning is Larry is a huge Met Fan, so working out to relieve stress is essential.
I think all members would agree that Larry’s presence brings a special energy, enthusiasm and friendliness to CF231. We are extremely fortunate to have Larry as a member of our CF231 family. Congratulations Larry....

When did you begin Crossfitting?
Why did you decide to begin Crossfitting @ CF231
My wife encouraged me to get back into exercise. I was looking for a gym which was different from the “standard gym”. I passed by CF231 many times and thought it might be worth a try. Glad I made the choice to step through the door.
Describe your first day at the gym.
It was a quite intimidating and a very humbling experience. But there was a real supportive community between coaches and members, which made me really feel at home.
What motivates you to keeping coming back each day?
Seeing the results of hard work. My dad passed away 4 yrs ago which made me realize how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle not only for myself but for my family as well.
What are some of your short term and long term goals.
The short term goal is to hit a 200lb clean. ( Larry hit that 200 lb clean yesterday during open gym). Long term goal is to continue to improve my overall fitness level.
What is your favorite WOD?
Any WOD with back squats
What is your least favorite WOD?
Any WOD with walls balls.
What’s your favorite music track at the gym?
I have no real preference as long as "Cheeto" doesn’t pick the playlist.
What are some hobbies outside the gym?
Never let the fear of striking out get in your way....Babe Ruth
I use to go down south fishing with my dad. Those were special times for me.
Share something about yourself that would surprise us
I had a golf scholarship to Rider College (single digit handicap), however my dad became ill and I decided to return home.
What changes have you seen since beginning Crossfit?
I have seen gains in strength and flexibility. I have made changes to my diet, have a better working knowledge of what healthy is.
What advice do you have for people just getting started.
Stick with it, it is humbling and at times frustrating. You will see tremendous results over time.
