He takes his warm-up very seriously, as he prepares for whatever Crossfit throws his way. Tommy is a gifted Crossfitter, he is strong, flexible, fast and focused. Over a 1 ½ year period Tommy has made tremendous improvements in his technique which has been the  foundation to his increased strength. If you watch Tommy perform a “snatch” you will know exactly what we are talking about.  Tommy participated in the Crossfit Open this past year, and is already thinking about preparing for next years open….now that is focus. June "Athlete Spotlight"

CF 231 is proud to “Spotlight” Larry Bilello

“Athlete of the Month” for June 2017.

16265392_1081796108609893_6194943575597457526_n.jpg

Larry has been a member of CF231 since last June. In that 12 month period, Larry has made tremendous gains in strength, endurance and flexibility. His commitment to the sport of Crossfit is obvious to all as he regularly attends classes, is a member of the Mongrel Union, participates in our Yoga classes and is an enthusiastic participant at every special event at the gym.

Larry participated in his first open competition this past winter and completed his first “Murph” this past Memorial Day weekend.

Larry refers to himself as a “gym rat".  Generally, you will find Larry coming to the gym around 6 pm to do specialty work or an extended warm -up before the 7 pm class. He spent time this winter working on a bar muscle-up which he mastered just before the 2017 open. What is also worth mentioning is Larry is a huge Met Fan, so working out to relieve stress is essential.

I think all members would agree that Larry’s presence brings a special energy, enthusiasm and friendliness to CF231. We are extremely fortunate to have Larry as a member of our CF231 family. Congratulations Larry....

When did you begin Crossfitting?

June 2016

Why did you decide to begin Crossfitting @ CF231

My wife encouraged me to get back into exercise. I was looking for a gym which was different from the “standard gym”. I passed by CF231 many times and thought it might be worth a try. Glad I made the choice to step through the door.

Describe your first day at the gym.

It was a quite intimidating and a very humbling experience. But there was a real supportive community between coaches and members, which made me really feel at home.

What motivates you to keeping coming back each day?

Seeing the results of hard work. My dad passed away 4 yrs ago which made me realize how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle not only for myself but for my family as well.

What are some of your short term and long term goals.

The short term goal is to hit a 200lb clean. ( Larry hit that 200 lb clean yesterday during open gym).  Long term goal is to continue to improve my overall fitness level.

What is your favorite WOD?

Any WOD with back squats

What is your least favorite WOD?

Any WOD with walls balls.

What’s your favorite music track at the gym?

I have no real preference as long as "Cheeto"  doesn’t pick the playlist.

What are some hobbies outside the gym?

Fishing, Running.

Favorite Quote

Never let the fear of striking out get in your way....Babe Ruth

Best Vacation

I use to go down south fishing with my dad. Those were special times for me.

Share something about yourself that would surprise us

I had a golf scholarship to Rider College (single digit handicap), however my dad became ill and I decided to return home.

What changes have you seen since beginning Crossfit?

I have seen gains in strength and flexibility. I have made changes to my diet, have a better working knowledge of what healthy is.

What advice do you have for people just getting started.

Stick with it, it is humbling and at times frustrating. You will see tremendous results over time.

March "Athlete Spotlight"

CF231 is proud to "Spotlight" member

Jen Battaglini

If you attend the 4 or 5 pm class at CF231 you will probably see Jen B there.   While warming up Jen is quite social, you will hear her exchanging stories of the day or week. However, once the workout approaches you see a change in Jen. She becomes highly focused and begins serious preparation for what is to come. Although she came to us as an athlete, we have seen great progress in Jen’s strength, flexibility and stamina. Her barbell movements are technically sound which has allowed her to hit a number of PR’s in the last few months. Jen is always looking to improve herself and yes she will be getting that strict pull-up real soon. We are very lucky to Jen as a member of our CF231 family.

Get to know Jen a little better by looking over this interview………………..

Family

My husband Kevin and I have 3 children, Emily, Hanna, and Bradley. We are pretty excited as a family because Hanna qualified for states in track and field. The state meet was March 4th in Staten Island.

What is your occupation?

I was formerly an accountant, I am currently a pre-school teacher

How long have you been CrossFitting?

Its been two years

What brought you to CF231?

I wanted to experience Crossfit, however it was Kerri Sanchez who talked me into giving it a try.

What was your first impression of CrossFit after your first “real” wod.

I felt it was very challenging and I like the competitive aspect. You are competing against the clock and yourself. I liked the varied movements.

What makes CF231 special to you.

The people, it’s a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere. Everyone is encouraging, and we all seem to be connected. There is a real social aspect to CrossFit which I really like.

Favorite movements?

I like rope climbing and back squats

Least favorite movement?

Right now its probably a strict pull=up because I can’t do one. But I’m working on it.

What movements would make up your favorite WOD?

I think they would be box jumps, wall balls and some type of sprint (100-200m)

What motivates you to keep coming back each day?

I just love working out, I’ve always been active its part of who I am.

What has been the most challenging part of your CrossFit journey?

I think it’s barbell work. As a College athlete (women’s sports) we never trained with weights, it was running push ups sit ups, more body weight exercises. Picking up the bar is new to me, I making progress, getting more comfortable with the movements.

Short term goals?

As I said looking for that strict pull-up

Long term goals?

Keep conscious of the connection between nutrition and exercise. The Paleo challenge made me very aware of what I put into my body. I’d like to keep up the good nutritional habits of the 30-day challenge. I love cookies and sweets that’s the challenge.

What/Who motivates or inspires you?

Believe it was  Mookie Wilson of the 69’ NY Mets. He was the Met centerfielder and I was a centerfielder. I just loved the way he approached the game. I just remember how much fun it was to watch him play……(she was very very young in "69)

Favorite Quote?

Simply put one word “Hustle”. I think what ever you do you have to do with a little “jump in your step”. You hustle through a workout; you push yourself each time.

Have you made any changes in your diet or workouts that have been the most successful?

The Paleo challenge made me aware of what I had been putting in my body. I now limit the processed food and sugars.

Favorite Cheat Meal?

I love Mexican

What are your hobbies?

I really like running and I’m a big reader. Reading the the “Shack” right now

Something no one at the gym knows about you?

I run a non-profit dance program. I hate to admit this I have no rhythm; I can’t really dance.

Advice for a new member or someone thinking of trying CrossFit?

Stick with it, you will be sore because you are using muscles you haven’t used in a while. Once you get over the “new soreness” you will love it.

December "Spotlight"

CrossFit 231 is proud to Spotlight member John Stio.

John Stio has been a member since March of 2016.  He is a regular at the 5:30am class, consistently getting in at least 3 days a week.  He only deviates his schedule to attend the strongman class, where he has become “one of the mongrels” at the Mongrel Union Strongman class

John was asked what he thought about CrossFit.

John said:" I love the varied workouts that keep exercise from getting boring.  I like that I am challenged every time I enter the gym and am constantly pushing myself to new limits.  I love the sense of community and the new friendships that I have created. I really love that my 2 boys are also involved and it is something we enjoy doing together in the gym and at home

Coach Chris on John…………………….

What I find unique about John is that while he self admits he was never a sports guy growing up, he is a natural at the gymnastic moves of CrossFit and has shown  steady strength gains.  John is a regular also at the strongman class where I've seen tremendous jumps in strength with the atlas stones and he's PR'd in his deadlift and bench press. John comes in every morning with a level of determination, willingness to try anything and an overall great attitude towards CrossFit and his fellow CrossFitters.  John, has two young boys who attend the CrossFit kids class and they have the same energy and determination as their dad and have the same natural ability in the gymnastic moves.  Like father, like son.   John is a special part of our CrossFit community.

November "Spotlight"

CrossFit 231 is proud to Spotlight member Anna Wysocka.

Anna was asked what she thought about CrossFit.

Through CF I discovered so many ways in which I can develop my body, movements I didn't know were possible for me to perform. What used to be intimidating, like Olympic lifts became my favorite challenge. CF helped me overcome many mental blocks and obstacles, giving me confidence in and outside of the gym. I built a better relationship with my body and body image, focusing on healthy and strong and fueling properly rather than not fitting into trending beauty standard. In the sense of community is second to none, so positive, supportive and encouraging!  It's been invaluable to me. There is something about sweating and struggling and growing together that opens us up to beautiful friendships. I can't say enough about this. CF231 does feel like a family to me”.

Coach Pete C. comments on Anna…………………….

You want an interesting story in how someone got started in CrossFit?? Look no further then our very own Anna Wysocka. She came in 23rd place in her age group at the 2014 Post Office run which entitled her to a free 2 month membership to CF 231. Obviously at her fitness level today she never would have won because she is constantly placing in her races now. But she did win and the rest as she says "is history".

Why did I choose her? The better question is how could I choose anyone else? Her dedication is beyond reproach. No matter the weather condition she can be seen making her way down Deer Park Ave on foot to her happy place, CF 231. She is often at open gym working on her goat or stretching in preparation for the 830am WOD. She is a sponge for fitness information and constantly strives to and is becoming better on almost a daily basis. She still runs and runs well but also has competed in a CF competition to take her out of her self described comfort zone. She and teammate "Cheeto" made the finals in her very first competition. There are certain people in our box who become pillars to that box. Without them we are less strong. So Thank you Anna for making and keeping us strong. Congrats! This is well deserved and long overdue.

August "Spotlight"

CrossFit 231 is proud to Spotlight member Brianna Sesto.

Brianna is a charter member of Crossfit 231. When asked about CrossFit, Brianna said, I’ve always been in love with working out but when I found Crossfit, I immediately knew I was home.  I live for the hard, grueling workouts that make you want to cry while doing them but afterwards feel so accomplished.  Or, those that look super easy on paper but turn out to be the most difficult ones.  You never know what you’re going to get with CrossFit but you also never realize how far your body can be pushed until CrossFit.

Coach John’s Comments:

Brianna Sesto is regular at the 8 pm class. Though Brianna is struggling with an injured shoulder, she always manages to find a means to workout. Brianna will often have to modify her workout because of her injury, however, in most cases the modifications she chooses are often more difficult then the posted workout.

Brianna is very serious about her fitness.  However, if you are in class with her you can’t help but notice her infectious smile as well as the words encouragement she provides to her fellow CrossFitters during the workouts. It’s a pleasure to have Brianna as part of our 231 Crossfit family.

July "Spotlight"

CrossFit 231 is proud to “Spotlight” member Kevin Egan.

Kevin has been CrossFitting for over one year. When asked about CrossFit Kevin stated "each class brings a new challenge, and with each challenge whether I succeed or fail I become a stronger"

Coach Bills Comments:

Kevin gets off the weekday train in Babylon and makes his way to 231 working out regularly at the 4pm class, he is also a loyal member of 231’s Mongrel Union. I have had the pleasure to coach Kevin on Sunday’s, where he can be seen working on his weightlifting techniques or most recently his bar muscle-up. He quickly went from a CrossFit “newbie” to the top of the 231 whiteboard. His CrossFit success is due to a great deal of hard work and practice he puts in to every session. I can appreciate how hard that can be after a full day of construction work.

Congratulations Kevin we are proud to have you as a member of the 231 family.

June "Spotlight"

Crossfit 231 is proud to "Spotlight" member Rob Levine.

Rob has been Crossfitting for three years. When asked about Crossfit , Rob said "Crossfit pushes you to new limits everyday. When you finish a WOD you are a little better than the day before"

Coach Chris's Comments:

Rob has been a member of CF231 for almost 2 years. He is a regular at the 7pm class. While Rob is always working hard he recently stepped up his training. You can see him practicing his Du's as well as his muscle up's. We are proud to have Rob as a member of our CF231 family.

May "Spotlight"

Crossfit 231 is proud to “spotlight” member Susan Aiken.

Susan has been Crossfitting for two years. Asked what she likes most about Crossfit , Susan said “the people at 231”.

Coach PMont’s Comments:

Susan is a true inspiration at our gym. You
will usually see Susan arrive a few minutes
early for class to begin her stretching
routine. If you haven’t noticed Susan, is very
serious about her warm up, even though
she has a smile on her face and is often seen
conversing with other members. What I
have noticed as a coach is Susan “never
quits”. No matter the WOD, the rep scheme
or the time of the workout she is determined to finish. We are “all” amazed at her determination, performance level and overall positive attitude. Our Crossfit 231 family is truly fortunate to have Susan as a member and friend.
